Mastering the challenges of food packaging
Ever shorter product lifecycles, stricter hygiene requirements and increasing labor costs – these are the challenges that the food packaging industry faces on a daily basis. SKY-LIGHT A/S, a leading provider of sustainable packaging with a high recycled component, also faced these requirements. SKY-LIGHT has been supplying the European pharmaceutical and food industries for over 50 years and has been successfully using Kiefel machines since 1985. Sustainability, consistency and the highest quality are our top priorities.
To meet the requirements for hygienic, fully automated cheese packaging, SKY-LIGHT opted for a turnkey solution from Kiefel: the SPEEDFORMER KMD 78.2 Speed, equipped with Kiefel Speed Automation (KSA).
This solution enables:
- Hygienic production: The base and lid of the cheese packaging are manufactured and packaged fully automatically and without operator intervention.
- Precise stacking & packaging: Precisely programmed robot grippers gently position the packaging in small boxes, including insert bags.
- Maximum output from a minimal footprint: A high cavity count, fast cycle times and compact design ensure maximum efficiency.

Shared challenges – innovative solutions
The complex geometry of the cheese container base and lid presented the project team with technical challenges. However, close partnership and solution-oriented action ensured reliable stacking and minimized the need for format parts
A high degree of complexity presented the entire project team with challenges, but also led to great technical solutions!
Choosing a full Kiefel solution turned out to be the key to success: They opted for the tried-and-tested SPEEDFORMER KMD 78.2 Speed steel rule machine, supplemented and equipped with Kiefel Speed Automation (KSA) full automation. According to Jens Rohmann, that was one of the decisive factors in the project:

Next steps: From production site to supermarket
After palletizing by the Kiefel Speed Automation, the cheese packaging is transported to Germany. This is where the packaging parts are separated, the bases are filled with cheese, the lids are sealed and the labeling is applied for the final product finish.
The finished cheese products then reach the supermarkets – safely packaged, attractively presented and produced in an environmentally friendly manner.
In my opinion, Kiefel offers the best machines for production with PET, utilizing fully automated solutions.
